Critics

"Critics these days are often accused – usually by angry commenters who liked something that was reviewed harshly and who feel they must assert, to themselves and the world, that their opinion is right – of thinking too hard about movies. Jerry Seinfeld

Jerry Seinfeld caught the comedy bug while attending Queens College in New York City in the 1970s and performing at open mic nights held by local improv clubs. His brand of observational comedy landed him appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Night With David Letterman, which led to his first live comedy special on HBO in 1987.

But it was his groundbreaking work on Seinfeld, the sitcom he co-created and co-wrote with comedian Larry David, that solidified the comedian’s place in pop culture. The “show about nothing” ran for nine seasons and introduced the world to Jerry, Elaine, Kramer, and George, a group of 30-something friends living in New York City. The writing was crisp, the one-liners were relatable, and the laughs came from spinning everyday events into comedy gold. Seinfeld wrapped in 1998, but it continues to live on in syndication, entertaining a new generation of fans.

After Seinfeld, the comedian returned to his stand-up roots, touring and creating new comedy specials. He also created the web-turned-Netflix series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, which features the hilarious conversations that ensue when Seinfeld takes various comedians out for coffee. Whatever he does next, Jerry Seinfeld will undoubtedly continue to share his unique, funny perspective on the world. Here are some quotes that remind us of this comedic genius’s brilliance.

Wicked

"2024's Wicked boasts a vast array of characters, from Elphaba to the Wizard of Oz, and there is one small character who is actually quite important, despite being cut from the stage musical. Wicked may be one of the top movies of 2024, but its origins are far older, with the publication of Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. In 2003, the book was adapted for the stage and became an instant hit on Broadway. Now, the beloved story of the Wizard of Oz's green-skinned witch is a Hollywood

blockbuster."

Aristotle

Aristotle was not just a great philosopher; the ancient Greek scholar also wrote about poetry, drama, comedy, biology, physics, politics, and music. His thirst for understanding the world seemed boundless. When his works were studied in the Middle Ages, he became known as not just a philosopher but “The Philosopher.” In the poet Dante’s 1472 epic poem Divine Comedy, Aristotle is called “the master of those who know.”Living in the fourth century B.C., Aristotle was the student of the renowned philosopher Plato and in turn became the tutor of Alexander the Great, then the prince of Macedonia. While serving at the royal courts, Aristotle became deeply concerned with how people might achieve eudaimonia, a Greek word meaning to flourish as a human being. To Aristotle’s mind, thriving in life was all a matter of character and virtue.Aristotle believed that humans could learn to be virtuous by making a habit of moral acts — in other words, if you practiced acting like a good person, you would eventually become good.“For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them,” he wrote in Nicomachean Ethics, one of his most influential works. “Men become builders by building and lyre players by playing the lyre; so too we become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts.”Aristotle saw virtue as a balance between two extremes. The brave person, for instance, was one who avoided acting like a coward (considered a vice) but was also not rash or foolhardy (a vice on the other end of the spectrum). He believed moderation brought out the best in all people and made human society harmonious.

Promises of The Heart

Your heart is always grateful. It always is protecting you from obstacles you see or not. I started reading this novel on July 2, 2024. It has 351 pages. It is written Nan Rossiter. I completed this novel on Friday August 30, 2024. It was a very heartfelt novel.

Macey wanted to get pregnant so bad but couldn't.

"Every time Macey had lost a baby, they dealt with their grief by throwing themselves into their house, the endless scraping, painting and restoring had been cathartic."

Promises of the Heart

Nan Rossiter p. 10

Ben was her best friend in school. He helped her with her studies as she helped him with his sports.

Harper went from foster home to foster home after his mother died. Macey had a sister, Mauve, who worked at an old folks home. Macey surprised Ben by being at their High School Reunion. Macey and Ben are thinking of adopting a three legged dog Macey and Mauve saw while they were getting plants.

Harper was rushed to the ER because he had trouble breathing. Janelle, Cora's friend and neighbor stayed and watched the rest of the children while Cora went to the Hospital with Harper. They are adopting the dog and naming him keeper.

"I'm so tired of reality and I think we can make a difference by doing this."

Macey

Promises of the Heart

Nan Rossiter p. 81

Rudy almost got hit by a car as she was riding her bike going to the playground with Harper. Rudy gave some of her hair to Locks of Love. Keeper is a therapy dog.

Frank wanted to play basketball to practice for a scholarship. Cora would look into childcare so he could.

Harper wasn't going to be in any of Rudy's classes as she wanted. She was very upset by this.

Macey is going to donate her hair to Locks of Love as well.

Keeper loved tennis balls. He always had one or more of them in his mouth.

Frank came home late because he left his cell phone in the school locker room and was playing basketball with friends. Cora was upset with him for that, she wondered why he couldn't call with someone else's phone. He suggested Cora put Harper's name on the Church's prayer list for her heart. Harper ran away, after Cora bought her some McDonalds and took her to work, because they got into a fight.

"You just need to get out there and do! Do what your heart is telling you! Your head certainly has some say in the matter, but when you feel your heart being nudged, you can be sure you need to perk up and pay attention."

Promises of the Heart

Nan Rossiter p. 206

Harper was staying in Mr. Peterson's abandoned house. Cora was praying for Harper's safety. Then as she was getting the rest of the children ready for school, she saw something move in Mr. Peterson's house.

Harper snuck out of Mr. Peterson's to Cora's to get something to eat, and than went back. She went to sleep, after she awoke she realized she was making people worry about her, which was unfair.

Ben and Macey were going to foster Harper when she was located. Harper went back to Cora's because she felt so alone and scared.

"There are a lot of what-ifs in life, and I know this hard you, but sometimes, you just have to keep the faith."

Macey

Promises of the Heart

Nan Rossiter p. 254

Macey and Ben are fostering Harper. Harper met Mauve, who took her out to get some clothes for school. She thought Mauve was hysterical. As she was dropped off at school Harper felt a pain in her chest, but didn’t say anything, because she didn’t want to worry Macey.

Harper loved her new class and teacher. They were about to take a field trip to an aquarium in a few weeks to see baby turtles. They journaled what they learned, because it helped them remember. They drew pictures in the journal. Harper was commended for her fine artwork and asked to show it at the aquarium.

Macey and Ben just hosted a Thanksgiving dinner at their house. Mauve and her boyfriend came. As well as Ben and Macey's parents.

Harper found a horseshoe crab when her class went on the beach. At the end of the trip Harper collapsed from fatigue on her heart. So her teacher called the ambulance and she went to the hospital.

Macey came home to spend the night with Ben and Keeper. She got showered and changed and said a quick prayer for Harper to get better.

A child got injured outside of Cora's. She got the ambulance, but wasn't told the identity of the child.

There using the heart from the injured child for Harper. The heart went in without incident. Cora met Macey by chance in the hospital chapel. Rudy gave Harper a stuffed dog with three legs like Keeper, when he and Cora visited Harper in the Hospital. Mrs. Holland, her teacher stopped in and gave her a leather bound sketchbook.

Mauve and her parents and Ben's parents welcomed Harper home with a huge sign outside. They had pizza and a heart shaped chocolate cake for dessert.

This novel was a great read. It was true to its name in so many ways. I loved this and recommend this to all who can find it.
